Sterling Price - Early Life Career: Born September 20, 1809 in Farmville, VA, Sterling Price was the son of wealthy planters Pugh and Elizabeth Price.  Receiving his early education locally, he later attended Hampden–Sydney College in 1826 before departing to pursue a career in law.  Admitted to the Virginia bar, Price briefly practiced in his home state until following his parents to Missouri in 1831.  Settling in Fayette and then Keytesville, he married Martha Head on May 14, 1833.  During this time, Price engaged in a variety of enterprises including tobacco farming, a mercantile concern, and operating a hotel.  Gaining some prominence, he was elected to the Missouri State House of Representatives in 1836.   Sterling Price - Mexican-American War: In office two years, Price aided in resolving the Mormon War of 1838.  Returning to the state house in 1840, he later served as speaker before being elected to the US Congress in 1844.  Remaining in Washington a little over a year, Price resigned his seat on August 12, 1846 to serve in the Mexican-American War.  Returning home, he raised and was made colonel of the  Second Regiment, Missouri Mounted Volunteer Cavalry.  Assigned to Brigadier General Stephen W. Marcy, no further punishment occurred.  Leaving military service on November 25, Price returned to Missouri.  Considered a war hero, he easily won election as governor in 1852.  An effective leader, Price departed office in 1857 and became the states banking commissioner.   Sterling Price - The Civil War Begins:  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   With the secession crisis following the election of 1860, Price initially opposed the actions of the southern states.  As a prominent politician, he was elected to head the Missouri State Convention to debate secession on February 28, 1861.  Though  the state voted to remain in the Union, Prices sympathies shifted following Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyons seizure of Camp Jackson near St. Louis and arrest of the Missouri Militia.  Casting his lot with the Confederacy, he was appointed to lead the Missouri State Guard by pro-Southern Governor Claiborne F. Jackson with the rank of major general.  Dubbed Old Pap by his men, Price embarked on a campaign to push Union troops out of Missouri. Sterling Price - Missouri Arkansas: On August 10, 1861, Price, along with Confederate Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch,  engaged Lyon at the Battle of Wilsons Creek.  The fighting saw Price win a victory and Lyon killed.  Pressing on, Confederate troops claimed another victory at Lexington in September.  Despite these successes, Union reinforcements compelled Price and McCulloch, who had become fierce rivals, to withdraw into northern Arkansas in early 1862.  Due to the conflict between the two men, Major General Earl Van Dorn was dispatched to take overall command.  Seeking to regain the initiative, Van Dorn led his new command against Brigadier General Samuel Curtis Union army at Little Sugar Creek in early March.  While the army was on the move, Prices major general commission was finally transferred to the Confederate Army.  Leading an effective attack at the  Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7, Price was wounded.  Though Prices actions were largely successful, Van Dorn was beaten the following day and forced to retreat. Sterling Price - Mississippi: Following Pea Ridge, Van Dorns army received orders to cross the Mississippi River to reinforce General P.G.T. Beauregards army at Corinth, MS.  Arriving, Prices division saw service in the Siege of Corinth that May and withdrew south when Beauregard elected to abandon the town.  That fall, when Beauregards replacement,  General Braxton Bragg, moved to invade Kentucky, Van Dorn and Price were left to defend Mississippi.  Pursued by Major General Don Carlos Buells Army of the Ohio, Bragg directed Prices enlarged Army of the West to march from Tupelo, MS north towards Nashville, TN. This force was to be aided by Van Dorns smaller Army of West Tennessee. Together, Bragg hoped  this combined force to would prevent Major General Ulysses S.  Grant from moving to aid Buell.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Marching north, Price engaged Union forces under Major General William S. Rosecrans on September 19 at the Battle of Iuka.  Attacking the enemy, he was unable to break through Rosecrans lines.  Bloodied, Price elected to withdraw and moved to unite with Van Dorn at Ripley, MS.  Rendezvousing five days later, Van Dorn led the combined force against Rosecrans lines at Corinth on October 3.  Assaulting the Union positions for two days in the Second Battle of Corinth, Van Dorn failed to achieve victory.  Angered by Van Dorn and desiring to take his command back to Missouri, Price traveled to Richmond, VA and met with President Jefferson Davis.  Making his case, he was chastised by Davis who questioned his loyalty.  Stripped of his command, Price received orders to return to the Trans-Mississippi Department. Sterling Price - Trans-Mississippi: Serving under Lieutenant General Theophilus H. Holmes, Price spent the first half of 1863 in Arkansas.  On July 4, he performed well in the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Helena and assumed command of the army as it withdrew to Little Rock. AR.  Pushed out of the state capital later that year, Price ultimately fell back to Camden, AR.  On March 16, 1864, he took command of the District of Arkansas.  The following month, Price opposed Major General Frederick Steeles advance through the southern part of the state.  Misinterpreting Steeles objectives, he lost Camden without a fight on April 16.  Though Union forces had won a victory, they were short on supplies and Steele elected to withdraw to Little Rock.  Harried by Price and reinforcements led by General Edmund Kirby Smith, Steeles rearguard defeated this combined force at Jenkins Ferry in late April. Following this campaign, Price began advocating for an invasion of Missouri with the goal of reclaiming the state and endangering President Abraham Lincolns reelection that fall.  Though Smith granted permission for the operation, he stripped Price of his infantry.  As a result, the effort in Missouri would be limited to a large-scale cavalry raid.  Moving north with 12,000 horsemen on August 28, Price crossed into Missouri and engaged Union forces at Pilot Knob a month later.  Turning west, he fought a string of battles as his men laid waste to the countryside.  Increasingly hemmed in by Union forces, Price was badly beaten by Curtis, now leading the Department of Kansas Indian Territory, and Major General Alfred Pleasonton at Westport on October 23.  Pursued into hostile Kansas, Price turned south, passed through the Indian Territory and finally halted at Laynesport, AR on December 2 having lost half of his command. Sterling Price - Later Life: Largely inactive for the remainder of the war, Price elected not to surrender at its conclusion and instead rode to Mexico with part of his command in the hope of serving in the army of Emperor Maximilian.  Turned down by the Mexican leader, he briefly led a community of Confederate expatriates living in Veracruz before growing ill with intestinal issues.  In August 1866, Prices condition worsened when he contracted typhoid.  Returning to St. Louis, he lived in an impoverished state until dying on September 29, 1867.  His remains were buried in the citys Bellefontaine Cemetery. In America, juveniles who commit adult crimes are tried every day in juvenile courts, where the juveniles are leniently given shortened sentences, and fail to learn from their mistakes. The criminals turn into our next door neighbors, our friends, and live their lives in harmony, leaving the victims and the victims’ families to suffer in pain and sorrow. Young people who commit violent crimes should be sentenced as adults because of the heinous crimes they committed, the unfairness to the victim’s family, and their potential danger to the society once they return. Initially, young people who commit violent crimes should be sentenced as adults. The question here is fairly simple: when a child kills, can this very same child, at the same time, be considered as an adult for his/her own action? Children in modern society are more s ophisticated at a younger age, encouraged by their parents and teachers to work as functional adults. At the age of fourteen, Oprah Winfrey became pregnant as a result of being raped. She gave birth to a premature baby boy named Canaan (Corinthois, 2015). A week later, Ms. Winfrey baby boy passed away in the hospital from health complications. During an interview with People Magazine, Ms. Winfrey stated she tried hiding her pregnancy from the world because she felt so much shame and pain (Corinthois, 2015). She was worried her career would be over if people found out about her pregnancy. She was worried that everyone would point the finger at her or look at her in a different light, but instead everyone felt empathy for her. The death of Oprah Winfrey son broke her down to her lowest. She was extremely devastated and felted wounded and betrayed by everyone who played a role (Corinthois, 2015). She gave advice and shared how she felt when she went through her experiences as a teenager and as an adult. Oprah Winfrey later realized her secret was liberating to the world, as it did more good than bad to her career. Ms. Winfrey started building relationships with her fans. She became more opened about her life experiences during her talk show as different topics arise. While taping a program on her show, Oprah Winfrey opened up about her drug usage. According to Washington Post article, a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show spoke about her drug addiction (Edwards, 1995). As the show guest told her story about using cocaine, Ms. Winfrey began crying and stated, I understand your situation, I did your drugs (Edwards, 1995). That day, during her television show, she revealed another one of her darkest secrets. She admitted to using drugs while being in a corrupt relationship with a man (Edwards, 1995). That relationship was no good for Ms. Winfrey as her life changed as soon as their relationship began. Once the relationship was over, she immediately stops using drugs as it was no longer apart of her life (Edwards, 1995). Also because of cultural diversity some ethnic minority families have patterns of single parent hood due to their own culture. For example over 50% of Afro-Caribbean families with children are single parent families. Berthoud (2003) found that attitudes of Afro-Caribbean women were characterized by ‘modern individualism’. Afro-Caribbean women are more likely to be employed than their Afro-Caribbean equivalents, so women rationally weigh up costs and benefits of living with the fathers and concluded the men were an unreliable source of income and potentially a financial burden. In conclusion, marriage is on the decline, but remarriages have increased. This does support a functionalist view that people still commit to the idea of marriage. Put pressure directly on an external wound with a sterile bandage, clean cloth, or even a piece of clothing. Direct pressure is best for external bleeding, except for an eye injury. Maintain pressure until the bleeding stops. Do not peek at the wound to see if the bleeding has stopped. If bleeding continues and soaks through the material being held on the wound, do not remove it. Simply place another cloth over the first one. Be sure to seek medical attention. Prevention from bleeding requires a person to use common sense and keep knives and sharp objects away from small children. Keeping your vaccinations up to date is another method of prevention. Generally, the tetanus immunization is renewed every 10 years. Another type of bleeding is a nose bleed. A nose bleed is a loss of blood from the mucous membranes that line the nose.

Flaws in Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” Essay

Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is by any means a classic. However, there are several flaws. First of all the coincidence that everything happens with in my mind detracts some from the story. The other major problem is that the book seems to drag on and on the closer you get to the end, as if Twain had a page quota to fill and was not worried about the story. The other problem brought up on our hand-out was Huck’s lack of seriousness in what was a very serious situation for Jim. As for the coincidence part, it appears most obviously as you read towards the end. For example Huck ends up at Aunt Polly’s, and I was thinking, yeah†¦ right those chances are about one in a million. And then after Huck tells Aunt Polly that he is Tom, Tom shows up†¦ uh-huh, I bet. It is things such as those I just mentioned that make it very difficult for me to read a book without becoming frustrated. It is probably because I am used to real life and like it or not real life is just not that perfect. My other gripe was that Twain seems to ramble on and on and on an†¦.. To me it seems as if the story that he was writing became faint shortly after the time when Huck says, â€Å"It’s me. George Jackson, sir†(pg. 95). I do have to give him that the feud was interesting filler, but you can only take so much filler. Then when John Wayne (The Duke) and Elvis (The King) come along there seem to be four or five stops along the river that except for one little detail, are the same. Please excuse the jump back, but how coincidental is it that you have a Duke and a King on the same raft in the middle of the Mississippi river (yes I do know they are not really royalty but that does not matter)? Even during all of this complaining I have done I did find humor in such things as when Huck was observing some local â€Å"loafers† and their discussions about borrowing and lending chewing tobacco. â€Å"Here, gimme back the chaw and you take the plug. † (pg. 138). I can just picture four or five guys laying around chewing tobacco with spit/tobacco juice running down their chins, probably in dirty overalls with no shirts on underneath and boots, to complete the look, three or four days of beard waiting to be shaved, and oh yeah, a nice old straw hat. The picture of this I have in my head is just so vivid that it disgusts me now. I think that is one of the reasons this is such a great book, the imagery. The final thing mentioned was Huck’s lack of seriousness or that he was too humorous or too wrapped up in fantasy for the situation both he and Jim were in. Here as opposed to the things I attacked above I will have to be on the side of the defense. My foremost reason is that I do not think Huck realizes the seriousness of the predicament. Huck is a boy that lives in Hannibal, MO during the times of the Civil War, he probably does not know any other ways to deal with anyone who is a slave or is trying to escape. Put yourself in his shoes once and think of the trouble you might have. Then think how you would deal with these problems. Would it be in the way many kids do, with a bit of fun to try to alleviate some of the tension? Take the time when Jim thinks Huck is dead and he shows up scaring Jim to the point of carrying out a conversation with a â€Å"ghost†. Jim says † I alwuz liked dead people, en done all I could for ? em†¦ â€Å"(pg. 40). Read that section over and see if it does not seem to be in good taste, if you can call anything done by Huck â€Å"tasteful†. I think it does. My final task is to come up with a new ending. I think my ending goes like this: Huck and Jim find the mouth of the Ohio river as planned and venture upstream by any means available. As they continue up the river the bond between the two runaways becomes ever stronger. When they reach the free states and Jim is officially free. After waiting around a while the two begin to get money in any way they can. When it is enough Jim buys his wife and children out of slavery, and Huck takes a cut (not too much, just enough to get home). Once home Huck starts all over with his ever interesting plots (not without the help of Tom Sawyer). Time passes and over the years Huck misses Jim and eventually embarks on a quest. The quest to find Jim. This journey would be much like the journey he and Jim took just a few years ago. This time though, there is no John Wayne and Elvis to make the story drawn out and boring towards the end. Then Huck finds Jim, meets the wife and kids, and goes back home to lead a normal (or as normal as can be) life working as little as possible and living off his $6000.
